Petition the Prime Minister

Tony Blair has set up an "e-petition" site. Any British citizen can start an electronic petition, and many have. For example Tony is being petitioned to release a Christmas single and to stand on his head and juggle ice cream.

I have started a petition:
We the undersigned petitition the Prime Minister to pay fulsome tribute to independent British podcasters in his Christmas message
You can sign it here.

NB - if you are thinking of starting your own petition (and why not?) the "No. 10 team" takes about a week to vet new petitions and post them to the site.

podcast no 51 - party time wasting is too much fun

play the podcast - 30:00 mins (right-click, save as, to download...)

I've set a little competition - e-mail me if you know which song the title of this podcast is from. Artist and song title please. I've just tried it in google and that won't help you! All will be revealed in 2 weeks time.

We start off in the mood of that mystery song, relaxed and tired in the small hours after a party. The music is -

Miranda Barber - Eggshells

The State Broadcasters - Takeshi and South Pole Stag Night

Recliner - Leaving Hollywood

Love Is Chemicals - A Portrait Of Your Post-Apocalyptic Son

Honourable mention: The Bay Bridged, a great podcast in which Christian and Ben interview artists from the San Francisco Bay area and play their music. That's where I found Love Is Chemicals.

Tune in next week for the anniversary podcast - all songs selected by you.

podcast no 49 - all at sea

Play the podcast - 30:00 minutes (right-click, save as, to download to your computer / mp3 player.)

First, the music:

Mellow Dramas - Inside Out. A fantastic track by Jen from DC, who performs poetry set to great electronic music. Watch the video for Inside Out.

Techno Squirrels - Mute. An electronica project based in LA, this is great techno / dance music.

When I was a novice podcaster, I was contacted by
Todd Stadtman from San Francisco. 9 or 10 months later, I finally got round to listening to his music. I said in the podcast that he reminds me of Elvis Costello. Listen to Anna-Li and Expert and see if you agree.

Finally, as promised last week, a very catchy song. Shipwrecked Man by Danish singer-songwriter Patrick Alexander.

Other mentions:

The Dogbox Podcast - music and motorsport. Bruce McKinnon submitted Shipwrecked Man to AMPed 48, which I presented a couple of weeks back.

Shane Carey's music min-festo - featured on the gaping void, an excellent blog by Hugh McLeod.

Clock by Nick Hemsley - a fine novel by an interesting writer.

podcast no 46 - all because the podcaster loves milk tray

play podcast no 46 - 30:00 minutes (right-click then save as to download)

Music played:

Kesseny - Simogenjo. Kesseny are from Cornwall (the name means harmony). They make excellent ambient music, and will accept commissions ...

Stereomovers - Ozean (buy their excellent ep from iTunes). Stereomovers are from Montreal. Great band!

The Twisted Melons - Panic.

Jette-Ives - In The Presence Of ... and Ultimately, Darling. Dark, brooding but melodic music. Jette-Ives are not far off fitting a composite of the perfect electrical language band. It's the combination of electronica, alluring female vocal, intelligience in vocals, lyrics and music ... Anyway, they've got an album out in January. I want a copy.

Milk Tray
- nice, but not as nice as Neuhaus cinnamon-pear truffles!

New banner

I was tidying up redundant files on the host server, and cleverly deleted by accident the banner graphic at the top of this page. I couldn't find a backup, so I had to create a new one. The image is a detail of a photograph taken at "At Bristol" on 23 August 2006.

[Later] Yikes - I have just discovered that I deleted most of the photos on my photo-blog, and so I will have to spend a couple of hours uploading them again.

podcast no 34 - cross-infection

Play podcast no 34 (right-click, then save as, to download to your computer or mp3 player)

This is a podcast about connections. I satrted off with a fantastic infectious groove, Infection Groove by The Invisible Republic - who as far as I know are not connected to anything else on the podcast. This band are not keen to tell us much about themselves. I know they are from the UK, I believe Scotland but could be wrong.

A connection is something that happens when you change trains, say at Oxford Circus. The Metro by Sleepthief is the second song I've played from the excellent Dawnseeker cd (buy it here), the vocals this time by Jerry Eckert. Last time I played a Sleepthief song it was Just say it with vocals by Kyoko Baertson.

Kyoko Baertson and Walter Hilhorst are Lunascape. They contacted me after podcast no 26 and kindly gave me permission to play Mindstalking. I need to get the new Lunascape cd Reminiscence, so if anyone reading this is wondering what to get me for Christmas ...

The last two songs are by English artists who do a lot of their work abroad, collaborating with various excellent musicians. Both Tim Bowness and Jan Linton have worked with Richard Barbieri, formerly keyboards man with Japan. Tim Bowness works in New York, and sings with No-Man. He also performs excellent mellow ambient songs such as Another World.

I was thrilled to exchange e-mails this week with Jan Linton who is based in Tokyo. Even more thrilled to be given permission to play Lose Yourself With Me, which features Bill Nelson on guitars. And Jan has just told me Tim Bowness has written lyrics for a couple of his new songs. You can buy Jan's music here and here.

Bill Nelson was in 70's band Be Bop Deluxe, whose song Electrical Language gave its name to this podcast, and provides the 2 lines used in audio bumpers in the podcast, "sometimes you hear me when our frequencies meet" and "turn up the rhythm and you'll pick up the beat".

Soundbed music in this podcast is by The Midnight Foundation, Williamson and Torchomatic.

As always, thanks to Dave Kenny aka Tragic Shellsuit Disaster who wrote and performed the title music. There'll be more from TSD in a few weeks' time.

podcast no 33 - do you know Mr Cairo?

Play the podcast (right-click, then save as, to download to your computer or mp3 player)

The title of this podcast was suggested by the fact that todays first band Beangrowers are from Malta, an island that has no snakes. Maybe the falcons got them. Enjoy Beangrowers' song You Are You Are.

The Voyeurs
are from Leeds. I played Pretty Young Thing in podcast no 2. I enjoyed playing that song again, followed by their latest release Under New Management.

Across the water in France you will find Mayday. The obvious influence behind Arena is The Cure. Check out Mayday's excellent music.

This morning I received an e-mail asking me to consider playing Shoes of a Beast by Peter Toh. Glad to!

Congratulations to 2 excellent podcasters who have recently reached 50 podcasts and are about to put out their first anniversary podcasts:

podcast no 32 - the boy/girl podcast

Play podcast no 32 (right-click then save as to download to your computer or mp3 player).

This podcast is all about duos, bands comprising a boy and a girl. They are:

bloodWIRE - Relinquish (Nemo mix). bloodWIRE are I-Li Chang and Shawn Brice from California. I played 2 of their songs on podcast no 7. This version of Relinquish is from the Multipass ep that I-Li and shawn sent me, containing special remixes of some of their songs for the Nemo Festival in Boston in October 2005. If you liked this, try their album Transformation.

Scottish brother and sister Steven Finnie and Jolene Crawford are Finniston. The second song in today's podcast is Listen To Your Mother from their album Popular Music That Will Live Forever. Finniston are founder members of the Wendy House collective, and the fifth song played, It Angers Me So is from Welcome To The Wendy House.

I played You (Always On My Mind) by Brackenridge in the now-deleted podcast no 1. Brackenridge were (they no longer exist as a unit) Shelley Brackenridge and Bill Matthews. I also played the version of this song by Evangeline, another Bill Matthews band, in podcast no 8, but as soon as I did that I got the news that Evangeline had ceased to be!

The Bads are from New Zealand. They are Dianne Swann and Brett Andrews. For a while they played in various bands in the UK and Dianne even performed with Radiohead. Earth From Space is the title track of their album, which is well worth getting: listen to Bit By Bit, which I played in podcast no 23.

For that "like I said" moment, the last song on the podcast is Interference by Electrum. A classic! Electrum used to be mysterious, electrumboy and electrumgirl, but they have since revealed themselves to be Caireen Harrison and Jamie Thompson. They say they used to be in Slow Loris and Angulus, but that you won't have heard of either.

So that's it, 6 songs for you. I talked over soundbed music by Williamson, Green Eyes and Map. I'm not quite happy with the sound of my bits - something changed when I put the computer set up back together after last week's furniture shifting. Let me know what you think.

The opening and closing music was written and performed by Tragic Shellsuit Disaster.

podcast no 31 - wearing two hats

Play podcast no 31 (to save to your computer or mp3 player: right-click, then save as)

[Saturday evening] I posted the podcast this morning, having recorded it on Tuesday. I've spent the day assembling furniture, as I explained when I recorded the podcast. The delivery van came nice and early - excellent service for an order placed on the net last Sunday (we specified a Saturday delivery). Also the self-assembly furniture was well-made and the assembly instructions easy to follow. But enough of that, let's get to the music:

Winston and The Telescreen - Let's Pretend We're Lovers. These guys are from Riverside, California, and when two members of the band aren't wearing their Winston and the Telescreen hats, they play in the next band.

Map - Strange Girl. I played another Map song a few weeks ago. I heard Strange Girl a few days ago and just had to ask Josh Dooley from the band for permission to play it, which was kindly given. When I sorted out the running order for this podcast I didn't realise the connection between the first two bands. I only discovered that when I came to check what I was going to say.

Caroline Vinciguerra - Bella's Song. And what a fantastic song. I'm going to submit this one to AMP'ed, the "house podcast" of the Association of Music Podcasting.

Circlesound - Feel The Energy and Seven Days. These guys are from Chester in the UK, and make an excellent sound. They also tell an excellent story about how they got together.

Today's soundbed music is by Map, Torchomatic and Cagey House. Many thanks to Tragic Shellsuit Disaster for the opening and closing music, composed and recorded especially for the electrical language podcast.

podcast no 30 - filling in the gaps

Play podcast no 30 (right-click then save as to download to your computer or mp3 player)

This one's a bit of a mish-mash, a gentle start with a louder ending.

To begin with, two Kates, both from Australia. Kate Miller-Heidke with Space They Cannot Touch, then Kate Winchester with Tightrope.

The remaining artists are all from the UK as we step up the tempo:

Anemo, from Brighton, with Fallout Renegade.

Syrus, from Windsor, and Damaged Goods.

Finally Caplyn from Newcastle upon Tyne in the North-East, and Shadowesque.

I filled in the gaps, talking over soundbed music by Green Eyes and Torchomatic.

podcast no 29 - Beauty and the Beast?

Play today's podcast (to download to your computer or mp3 player - right-click, then save as ...)

I've had all the music in today's podcast on my mp3 player for a few months, and I really had to get round to playing these tracks. Apologies to all the artists. Also, there's a more vigorous rock edge to all today's music.

Forza Italia! Today's first track is
Mystical Elysian Love by Belladonna, from Rome. Belladonna have just completed a few gigs in the UK, so I really should have played them earlier.

Then Echograph from Scotland, with
Break Me Down. Echograph say that they play guitars and drums and sing. They do indeed!

After that I played
Moving To The Movement, by Jane Air from London. I played 2 Jane Air songs in podcast no 13. Moving to the Movement is from a new ep the band are presently working on, called Us:Them, to be released in the autumn.

Allez les Bleus! I finished with 2 tracks by the excellent (even if they number Yes amongst their influences) Hauteville from Paris.
From Adam to Atom is followed by Monster.

In the podcast I talked about my very basic Heath Robinson type podcasting set up. Here are a couple of photos. The first is of the mic and the pc monitor with audacity up (note the desk lamp as microphone stand, with plastic g-clamp and pencil to hold the mic in place.) The second shows the kit.

Soundbed music for today's show was by

podcast no. 28 - music for missed penalties

Play podcast no 28 (right-click, then save as, to download to your computer or mp3 player).

Today's podcast is a day late after Caroline and I went to Rutland on Friday for the wedding of our friends Piers and Diana. Piers is Richard's godfather. They've gone on a walking holiday in Slovenia for their honeymoon. The food at the reception was fabulous: just look.

Yesterday we drove back, about 160 miles, looking at Rutland Water on the way, then deciding not to stop in Stamford given the hordes of people there in the heat of the day. So we got home in time to see it become 40 years of hurt.

And with that, to the music. Today's show starts with Cry No More by Graystar. Graystar are from Edinburgh, Scotland, and their Album "A Million Pieces" is due to be released in August 2006.

I played Never Never Land by Brown Bag Special in podcast no 1. I've taken that podcast down, so it's now a collectors' item, exchanging hands for large amounts of cash on eBay (I wish!). I digress: this is an excellent song by a four piece from Tucson, Arizona.

I first heard the Hotrod Cadets on the tartanpodcast more than a year ago. My Heart Sinks is a great pop song from their album Breaking Up. The Cadets have another album out any time now. I'll bring news when I have some.

The last 2 songs were by Id Guinness, from Vancouver, Canada. Id Guinness is a fan of Roxy Music. He is also an excellent songwriter. The songs I played are The One That Got Away and Rising River. Id Guiness also has an album out later this year, Cure For The Common Crush, so if you liked these songs keep an eye on his website.

The soundbed music today was by Map and Torchomatic. The title music is by Tragic Shellsuit Disaster.

Play podcast no 27 (to download the show to your computer or mp3 player, right-click, then save as ...)

Sorry about the delay in getting these show notes up. I posted the podcast yesterday, but didn't have the time to do these notes.

This week's podcast once again features bands from New Zealand, where Peter Jackson filmed The Lord Of The Rings. Again, many thanks to Benjamin Somerville from Venture Electric for his help. Benjamin let me know that while I was enjoying glorious weather in the UK as mentioned in podcasts 25 and 26, it is winter in NZ. And he sent me a photo to prove it (click on the photo to enlarge it).

The 5 tracks played in today's podcast are:

First of all, a track with a harder edge than I've played in a while.
Under a Dying Sky, by Alpine Fault, an Auckland based "melodic metal" band. They kindly e-mailed me the latest mix of the song - they are presently in the studio.

Enough, by Amperzahn, also from Auckland. Amperzahn are also in the studio, and again Enough is a demo. Sounded good to me!

I Know What I'd Do
, by The Madison Press, another Auckland band. I know what I'd do is their first single, and I predict big things for this band.

F*** All To Do, by The Shrugs. I may be slightly prudish, but I had to think about playing this one purely because of that word in the title. In the end I decide that the song was so good, and the phrase is one that people use, and was not contrived in its context in a song about being at home by yourself in the suburbs, all day, every day.

Benjamin Somerville himself introduced the last song, Cash (or Heather Nova vs Johnny Cash), by Venture Electric. This is one of my favourite songs that I've played on the podcast - it has previously featured in no.s 12 and 13.

Jessica talked to me about Age of Mythology (Gold Edition), a pc game by Ensemble Studios

Soundbed music played today was by Cagey House and Torchomatic. The title music is by Tragic Shellsuit Disaster.

Other news: The Eisenhowers' cd Almost Half Undressed arrived this week. I was able to meet the competition winner Mark Johnson to give him his prize in person.

podcast no 26 - adrift on a sea of tranquility

Play podcast no 26 (to download to your computer or mp3 player, right-click, then save as ...)

Once more, it's a glorious summer morning here in Hampshire. England have six points, and are through to the second round, so life's not bad. Yes, I'm adrift on a sea of tranquility.

So, on a day like this, how can I resist the temptation to play a song called Weatherman? This is by Boo Hewerdine, a hugely talented songwriter. I guarantee that you will have heard one of Boo's songs, but probably sung by someone else. Many thanks to MVine Records for kind permission to play 2 songs from Boo Hewerdine's recent album Harmonograph, a collection of songs written by Boo but previously recorded by others (e.g. Patience of Angels, a hit for Eddi Reader in the early 1990s).

Sleepthief is the musical project of Justin Elswick. Justin's day job is as a music attorney; at night he transforms into a talented musician, writing and performing mellow electronica featuring guest vocalists. Just Say It is by Sleepthief featuring Kyoko Baertsoen.

Jen from Washington DC performs lyrical poetry to electronic music provided by others, under the name Mellow Dramas. Jen has kindly permitted me to play Inside Out, featuring music by Solar Moon.

Paul Aiden is a singer-songwriter from London. He is acquiring a reputation All Over The World, and it won't be long before we're all hearing more from Paul.

The podcast closes with another Boo Hewerdine song, The Girl Who Fell In Love With The Moon ... leaving us adrift on a sea of tranquility.

Many thanks to: the radio guy for the audio between the first 2 songs; to Torchomatic, Cagey House and Map for the soundbed music; and to Tragic Shellsuit Disaster for the title music.

podcast no 25 - the sunny saturday show

Play the podcast (right click and save to download)

It's a glorious day; it's been a glorious week. So I have some mellow songs for that mellow weekend mood. And England have 3 points in the bag!

So, to the music. Today's show started with another song by Junk, who I played in podcast no 20. This time I played Rumour. You can buy Junk's excellent album The Last Stand Of The Conspiracy Cowboy via their website and you can hear and purchase 3 songs via MVine records.

Then I played Hopelessly Helplessly by Simon Andrews, a 22 year old singer-songwriter from Derby.

Katey Brooks is a 21 year old from Bristol with a rich deep voice. If the rest of her songs are as good as Willing she should be one to watch out for.

To London - Ontario - for Lori Girard aka Askher, and an excellent song called Karma.

Last up, T-Spoon, who tells us little about himself, but played an excellent song called Weary Bones.

Honourable mention for help with the html code for this relocated page to Grant from Three From Leith, an excellent music podcast.

Soundbed music today was by Dave Rave and Map. The title music is by Tragic Shellsuit Disaster.

welcome to the new home of the electrical language podcast

I have moved the podcast to my website www.electricallanguage.co.uk.

Fear not, podcasts 6 to 24 are still at the old site:

Do you want to submit music to electrical language?

(Updated 15July 2008)

Would you like to submit a song or two to be considered for play on this podcast? There are just a few guidelines.

1. My only selection criterion is that I have to like the music. Why not listen to a podcast or two to find the kind of thing I like? My tastes range from acoustic to electronica to catchy pop to indie rock, but it's by no means a closed list. I'm not that keen on heavy stuff. If I don't like your music, it doesn't mean that your music isn't good. It's a matter of my taste, and I suggest you try a few of the podcasts at the
Association of Music Podcasting (I'm a member).

2. I only play podsafe music (
Wikipedia article). So if you do not have the right to permit me to play the song, please do not submit it.

3. To submit a song, please e-mail mp3 files or a link to where I can download them to
lectriclingo@gmail.com. Please include in the e-mail itself the obvious details like who you are (ie name of artist / band) and name of song. It also helps if you can add some information, where you're from, any albums etc, website url, and any stories behind the songs. If you can give me links to a site where people can buy your music, I'll post that. Also please give me links to any site eg YouTube where there may be a video of the song you have submitted and I'll post that as well. You can also upload files to drop.io/telp123

4. I publish the podcast as a 160 kbps mp3 file. Please encode mp3s at a bitrate of 160 kbps or higher if at all possible before sending them to me. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE include in the song's ID tags the song name and the band/artist name. To get a file called "track 4"with no information to help me identify the artist is really frustrating!

5. Please note that I may also submit your music to other podcasts or feeds including
AMPed (the weekly update of the Association of Music Podcasting) Made in the UK (for British bands and artists!) and other podcasts I contribute to. None of these are commercial and I make no money at all. The purpose is to increase exposure for your music and my podcasting. Please let me know if you would prefer me not to do this.

6. If you can do this, please also record and send me a "station ident". I use one of these at the start of each podcast. The basic script is:

I'm [name][from band] and when I'm not [you make this bit up - please be as silly or surreal as you want!] I like to listen to electrical language

(Please say something more original than " ... when I'm not listening to electrical language ... " I have had quite a few of those. I enjoy the wacky ones, and I know listeners do.)

7. That's it! any questions: lectriclingo@gmail.com
